Why Take the PSAT/NMSQT?
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is more than good practice for the SAT, and the scores are more than just a number.

Enter the National Merit Scholarship Program
Students who take the PSAT/NMSQT and meet other program entry requirements specified in the PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide will enter the National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

PSAT/NMSQT Test Dates
 
Students don't register for the PSAT/NMSQT through College Board. Schools and districts choose whether and when to offer it.

To find out more about the PSAT/NMSQT at your school, contact your principal or counselor.

PSAT/NMSQT testing may occur on a school day between these dates:

  • October 1–31, 2025
    • Schools may also choose to administer the PSAT/NMSQT on Saturday, October 11, 2025.

Test Fees
SAT Registration Fee

The SAT registration fee is $68. Some students are eligible for a fee waiver.

Additional fees are charged for these services.

Fees Through December 2026

Service Fee Details
Change test center $34 For changing your test center only. (To change the test date, you must cancel and register for a new test.)
Cancel fee $34 For canceling your registration by the change deadline.

Free with fee waiver (upon cancellation, your unused fee waiver benefits will be returned to you).
Late cancel fee $44 For canceling your registration after the change deadline, by Thursday 11:59 p.m. ET before test day.

Free with fee waiver (upon cancellation, your unused fee waiver benefits will be returned to you).
Late registration $38 For registering after the regular deadline but before the late registration deadline.

Free with fee waiver.
Waitlist $0 For joining Waitlist, which allows you to be automatically placed into an open seat when one becomes available within your set radius.

Fees are charged for some score-related services.

Unlimited free score reports with fee waiver		 Your first 4 score reports are free if you order them by 9 days after the test date. Additional reports or reports ordered after that time incur this fee. See further information at Sending Scores.
Rush reports $31 Additional score report fees apply.
Get scores by phone $15 per call Available at the same time as online scores. You must pay by credit card at the time of the call.
Archived scores $35 Additional score report fees apply.
