PASCAGOULA, Miss. — The Board of Trustees of the Pascagoula-Gautier School District has selected Dr. Caterria Payton as the district’s next superintendent.
Dr. Payton, a dedicated educator with more than 25 years of service in PGSD, brings a wealth of leadership experience and a deep commitment to student success.
Dr. Payton began her career in PGSD as an assistant teacher in 1999 and served as a teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent. Her extensive experience allows her not only to understand the district’s culture but also to help shape it into the high-performing institution it is today. Throughout her career, she has consistently demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, instructional leadership, and community engagement.
“We are confident that Dr. Payton’s leadership, experience, and vision will continue to drive our district forward,” said Tracy Jackson-Wilson, PGSD Board President. “Her deep roots in our community and proven track record of success make her an outstanding choice to lead PGSD into the future.”
During her tenure, Dr. Payton led initiatives that have contributed to significant district achievements. She played a key role in Pascagoula High School earning an “A” rating, which contributed to PGSD achieving the first-ever districtwide “A” rating. Her dedication to excellence and leadership has also earned her multiple accolades, including being recognized as Teacher of the Year, District Administrator of the Year, and State Administrator of the Year.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dr. Payton has been actively engaged in the Pascagoula and Gautier communities for over two decades. Her three children attended both Gautier and Pascagoula schools and are all Pascagoula High graduates. Her grandsons currently attend PGSD schools and participate in local youth sports. Her dedication to the district extends beyond the classroom, reinforcing her commitment to fostering strong community ties.
“I am excited about becoming the leader of the district where I have spent my entire career,” said Dr. Payton. “It is an incredible privilege to build on our district’s achievements, and I look forward to the journey of continued success alongside our educators, families and community partners.”
Dr. Payton will officially assume her role on July 1, 2025.
